Overview
When the mighty, venerable King Lear abdicates, he divides his kingdom by means of a test; which of his daughters loves him most. His youngest, Cordelia, refuses to play along. Lear, his vanity hurt, cruelly banishes her.
Stripped of power, Lear is abused shamefully by his other daughters. The kingdom descends into anarchy and Lear, abandoned by all but a few loyal followers, wanders crazed on a wind-blasted heath, cursing mankind for its cruelty and hypocrisy.
Shifting its focus from family to community, to country and beyond, this play questions the very centre of our moral being.
